Ethiopian Reporter’s Yonas Amare Abducted by Masked Men

Yonas Amare, a senior editor at the Ethiopian Reporter and The Reporter, remains missing after being abducted by a group of masked individuals several days ago.

Individuals wearing what appeared to be military uniforms and face masks took Yonas from his residence in Koye Fiche, Addis Ababa, at around 9:30PM on the night of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, according to eyewitnesses.

These individuals confiscated the mobile phones of residents in the area before detaining Yonas to prevent videos of his abduction being recorded. Residents were instructed to remain inside their homes while it was taking place, and warned not to talk about it afterwards.

Yonas’s whereabouts remain unknown. The Addis Ababa Police Commission has stated it does not have Yonas in custody. No formal charges have been instituted against Yonas, nor has he been brought before a court of law.
