Rising stars hope to shine at World Cup qualifiers

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the draw for the 2024 U-17 and U-20 Women’s World Cup African qualifiers. Ethiopia’s national teams have commenced regular preparations.

Ethiopia has received a bye into the second qualifying round of the U-20 Women’s World Cup where they will play the victor of the match between Equatorial Guinea and Libya.

The first match of the second round for the U-20 qualifiers will happen from October 7-9, 2023 the second leg scheduled for October 14-16, 2023. Should Ethiopia’s U-20 women advance past the second round, they will face the winner of Mali vs Algeria in the third round of the five round qualifying competition.

For the U-17 qualifiers, Ethiopia will start in the second round facing South Africa. The first leg is scheduled for January 23-February 4, 2024 with the second leg from February 9-11, 2024. The qualifiers will continue through the fourth round.

The Ethiopian U-17 women hope to qualify for the World Cup after an impressive start in the second round.

It should be noted that the Ethiopian under-17 and under-20 women’s national teams have reached the final qualifying round for the 2022 World Cup.

Ethiopia’s under-18 women’s national team started preparations for the women’s CECAFA tournament hosted by Kenya on June 6, 2023. Kenya will host the tournament on June 6, 2023. The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) announced that 34 players have been called up and are residing in hotels.

The team is preparing for regular training at the Ethiopian Sports Academy, under the guidance of head coach Endalekachew Chaka and his assistant coaches Kumara Bekele and Reuda Ali.
