Ethiopian Premier League awards prize money with Insurance topping the list

The Ethiopian Premier League Share Company (EPLSC) has announced the prize money for the 2024/25 season, with champions Ethiopian Insurance topping the list. The prize money is calculated based on each club’s final standing in the league.

Following the exit of SuperSport — the television and naming rights holder — after the completion of a five-year partnership, Ethiopian clubs have earned a higher amount of money. The prize money, which was part of the deal with SuperSport, is distributed to clubs based on their final league positions. EPLSC General Manager Kifle Seife previously stated that the prize pool would increase due to the devaluation of the Ethiopian Birr against the US Dollar in 2024. Addis Ababa-based clubs earned the most, with Ethiopian Insurance and Ethiopian Coffee leading the table.

League champions Ethiopian Insurance earned $290,340.27 (40,295,687.24 Birr), while Ethiopian Coffee followed with $271,661.98 (37,703,368.19 Birr). EPLSC stated that a total of $2,951,170.13 (409,586,409.60 Birr) was awarded to clubs as prize money. The league claimed that this level of prize funding places it among the top five leagues in Africa in terms of payout.

Sidama Coffee and Mechal earned the least after both clubs were found to have fielded ineligible players during the season. The three Tigray-based clubs were not awarded any prize money, as they were not part of the share company at the start of the season.
