The setting and the date was historic and legendary. Almost 28 years after Nazi Hitler sponsored Olympics where weight supremacy was was supposed to be crowned and was sidetracked by the victory of Black Jessie Owens.
The barefoot Abebe broke another white supremacy myth by running barefoot and winning the gold in the marathon after breaking a record that was held unbroken for 17 years. At the end of Abebe’s victory lap, the Ethiopian national anthem was played while the Ethiopian flag the green , yellow and red was being raised for the first time in Italian skyline.
The next day a leading Italian paper declared:
“IT TOOK A WHOLE BATTALION ARMY FOR MUSSOLINI TO INVADE ETHIOPIA. BUT IT TOOK ONLY A SINGLE SOLDIER FROM THE IMPERIAL BODYGUARD TO CONQUER ROME.”
Those were triumphant testimonial for legendary heroes like Abebe.
ETHIOPIA SHALL TRIUMPH!
