GERD Inauguration Ceremony Commences in Benishangul-Gumuz

The inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is underway in the Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State, marking an important milestone for Ethiopia’s development ambitions and signalling the end of a tumultuous 14-year journey constructing Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam on the Abay River.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and other senior government officials are in Benishangul for the ceremony, along with the presidents of Kenya, Djibouti, Somalia, and Barbados.

The dam, which will be able to produce around 5,000 megawatts of power, is the culmination of more than a decade of collective effort involving countless Ethiopians.
