Saint George to hold General Assembly amid leadership crisis

Ethiopian giants Saint George are set to convene a general assembly amidst the club’s struggles in recent times. The record Ethiopian champions are going through a rough patch after a rift broke out between the club patron and chairman a few years back.

The club chairman, Abenet Gebremeskel, extended his warm Ethiopian New Year wishes to Saint George fans and promised that the club will hold an elective general assembly in October 2025. The current Saint George board has already passed its time, as fans demand successors to be voted in with the club being in a dire situation. Some board members have shown interest in exiting the top leadership.

Gebremeskel, in an official statement, asked fans to get ready for a general assembly next month. The assembly is expected to address the current problems of the club. Saint George missed out on league titles for the past two seasons and lost some key players during the transfer window.

Gebremeskel is still in a feud with club patron and Ethiopian-born Saudi billionaire Mohammed Hussien Ali Al-Amoudi. The rift between the two key Saint George figures has affected the overall activity of the club recently.

Some sections of fans are seeking Al-Amoudi backer and board member Jemal Ahmed to take over from Gebremeskel. The chairman is currently in the United States after being released from prison over allegations of crimes related to a property he co-owns with his former close confidant Al-Amoudi.
